Antibiotic resistance is a major global public health issue and a threat to the future of healthcare. Without antibiotics, many routine treatments will become increasingly dangerous.
Setting fractured bones and other routine surgery, even chemotherapy all rely on access to antibiotics that work. Antibiotic resistance is driven by the use of antibiotics so a key way of tackling it is to reduce their use. (sapg.scot 2024)
These sessions will be facilitated by Dr Mary Peirse, who is a consultant microbiologist at Raigmore Hospital.
ECHO is designed to help practitioners master complexity by looking at anonymised patient case examples which represent a wider learning need and opportunity. For this programme Mary and her colleagues will present cases which will inspire a group dialogue and while doing this they will offer a combination of teaching, group mentoring and facilitation to ensure that knowledge grows and future patients can benefit. As sessions progress, participants should feel more comfortable to bring their own cases to the group.
Infection management and antibiotic resistance are growing issues that affects people across all disciplines in healthcare. As such, anyone with interests and/or concerns about this topic is welcome to attend.
We ran a one off session in early 2025 and we are at the planning stages of this ECHO programme. Session dates are confirmed with more details to follow.
