Facilitator

Dr Mary Peirse

Dr Mary Peirse is a consultant in Microbiology and Infectious diseases in NHS Highland, and is based at Raigmore Hospital. She is the clinical lead for microbiology, co-chair of the Antimicrobial Management Team in Highland and member of SAPG

Antibiotic resistance is a major global public health issue and a threat to the future of healthcare. Without antibiotics, many routine treatments will become increasingly dangerous.

Setting fractured bones and other routine surgery, even chemotherapy all rely on access to antibiotics that work. Antibiotic resistance is driven by the use of antibiotics so a key way of tackling it is to reduce their use. (sapg.scot 2024)

This is an opportunity to join Mary Peirse, Consultant in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and colleagues at Raigmore Hospital who will share knowledge about:

How antibiotic resistance effects our local antibiotic guidance

NHSH antibiotic resistance data

–Changes in empirical antimicrobial prescribing guidelines

Antimicrobial prescribing practices in NHSH

How microbiology testing can help guide management of infections in the community

–Helpful samples, and when to send them

Following this session we will also gather feedback about future subjects which could be addressed in ECHO.

This is an online event which will benefit GPs and prescribers.
